Bill and Jake

The panel presentation that my group and I did in class was about the relationship between Jake and Bill. They are both "manly men" who make fun of others for being less of a man then they are their relationship also changes dynamic depending on where they are and who is around them.

When Jake and Bill see each other in Paris their relationship is not as intimate. At first they talk in the passing. We later see them get more intimate when they go out to dinner. I think that they feel pressured by Paris and Paris society to conform more with societies standards. Even though Paris was more socially liberal then other parts if the world there is still the pressure of all their friends. With Brett, Mike, and Cohn around Jake and Bill can not fully express there relationship. Their banter in Paris is very different to their banter in Spain.

Jake and Bill go on a vacation together to go fishing in a small town in the Basque country in northern Spain. Fishing again is a very manly activity. The article we presented explored the relationship between Jake and Bill as a homosexual relationship. The article said many of the jokes that they made to each other were sex jokes. I think that Jake and Bill were able to "explore" their relationship more when they were alone in Spain. When they were in Spain there was no one that they had to impress or assert their masculinity upon. They also did not have to hide any part of their close relationship. They were free to express themselves how they wanted to. What I found especially interesting about their relationship was I had not expected it from the two of them. Jake always seemed very conscious of his war injury and that is why he acted better then everyone else. In Spain, which was untouched by World War I, Jake seems more untouched by the war as well. Bill is very similar to how he acted in Paris, ironic. However his irony is more extreme when he and Jake are alone. The article said that some of the jokes that Bill made were in reference to male genitalia which Jake doesn't have. These jokes show how in Spain they were able to let go of their everyday problems.

The article we discussed also went too far at some points. When Bill said something in reference to rear ends the article took the implications too far. What Bill said was simply a common fraise that people today still use, but the article took the implications too far in my opinion.
