Catcher in the Rhye

I really enjoyed this book. It was an easy read which is not something we always get with books in english class. I especially liked Phoebe because she was so direct. Holden encounters many people throughout he book who he says are fake, and they really seem to be from what he tells us. For example Holden complains about Stradlaters fake cleanliness. He says that while he might seem clean and perfect he actually is not, his razor is super dirty but he is always clean shaven. Phoebe is not fake, she tells Holden what she thinks right away. She sees right through Holden, something not many people seem to be able to do. Throughout the book we see Holden lie and everyone seems to believe him. For example Holden lies to the mother of one of his peers that he meets on the train. He says her son is a great guy even when he is the complete opposite. Phoebe does not believe his lies and this is one quality which makes her so unique. The moment she realizes he should be at school she know he got kicked out even though he tries to lie to her.
Phoebe also does not let Holden run away. Holden is about to leave for the west when Phoebe shows up wanting to go with him. He does not let her come and agrees to stay with his family in New York instead. Throughout the book we see Holden running away, first from his teacher at Pencey, his classmates at Pencey, then Pencey, and then Mr. Antolini. Phoebe is the only one who can get him to stay. I think she really helps Holden acknowledge the fact that he does not seem to like anything and that could be the cause for his unhappiness.
When Phoebe is on the carousel that also seems to be the moment that Holden is able to accept that he is growing up. He sees Phoebe riding around and around but he know that someday they will come to the park and she will not want to ride the carousel so many times, and then not at all. But he seems okay with it. I think we see Holden's acceptance when he stays sitting on the bench even when it starts to pour. He know that he will stick by her no matter what and nothing can change the moment that they have now.

  1. I agree, you point out another really important thing, which is that Phoebe's "presentness" might be something Holden values as well. She is real, but also maybe minimizes Holden's fear of time because she makes it seems so valuable in the moment.

  2. I found Phoebe to be really interesting as well. Holden really cares about her and she is one of the few sources of light in Holden's dark world. Holden feels like Phoebe gets him, and part of that as you mention is her directness. Holden appreciates her honesty and transparency.
